"A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. "Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. "And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. "But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold." When He had said these things He cried, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" ---Luke 8:5-8
"Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. "Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. "But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. "Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. "But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience. ---Luke 8:11-15
It is important that we prepare the soil of our hearts for the seed that is the word of God. Much too often our hearts, the soil, are filled with thorns and weeds that choke the life from the seed. The thorns and weeds are the pleasures and cares of this life.
Much of the Kingdom is compared to sowing and reaping. Anyone who has ever kept a garden knows that weeds can suck the life from the other plants. Weeds also do not "look pretty". How many of us in an effort to "look right", only trim the weeds so that what others see is "pretty"? We leave the roots and before we know it, the weeds are again sucking the life from us and keeping the seed of God's word from growing in our hearts. God wants us to pull those weeds by the root, leaving nothing behind that can spring back up later. Weeding of a garden is an ongoing task. So it should be in the keeping of our hearts. We must keep our heart's soil ready for the word of God. There is so much life in the word of God. Just as a tiny seed can spring forth a large beautiful plant, the seed of the word of God in the right heart can bear much fruit.
The rocky soil can be compared to someone who hears the word of God, but does nothing with it. God wants us to take what we hear and apply it to our lives. When we do this we will grow. Lord, help us not to have a rocky heart.
What type of soil is in your heart? Ask God to help you keep your soil ready to receive the seed of the word of God.
